The Biomedical Instrumentation Research Laboratory (BIRLAB) was created in 2001 with the vision of utilizing knowledge in the fields of electrical engineering, medical instrumentation and biomedical acoustics for the development of technologies that meet specific clinical needs.  The laboratory currently focuses in therapeutic ultrasound, specifically in the areas of acoustic neuromodulation and sonoporation.  The area of acoustic neuromodulation entails the use of low intensity focused ultrasound to modulate the activity of neural structures in both the peripheral and central nervous systems.  This technique has great potential in the treatment of neurological disorders such as epilepsy, depression, tremors, anxiety, as well as for the treatment of addiction.  Sonoporation deals with increasing the permeability of cell membranes via ultrasound-induced cavitation of microbubbles.  Sonoporation is used to increase the uptake of substances like, drugs, genes and nanoparticles into cells.  Another focus of the laboratory has been the development of instrumentation needed for the characterization of magnetic nanoparticles and the practical application of magnetic fluid hyperthermia for cancer treatment.
