Dr. Gabriel A. Infante Méndez received his BS in Chemistry from the Catholic University of Puerto Rico, an MS in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus, and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Texas A & M University where he was selected “Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Chemistry”. Dr. Gabriel Infante did his post-doctoral work in Radiation Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University.

 

Dr. Gabriel Infante is currently a Professor of Chemistry and MSEIP Program Director since 2008 at the Metropolitan University (UMET) in Puerto Rico, an Ana G. Mendez University System. Dr. Infante Méndez tenure of over 35 years in education from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico where he performed duties such as Professor of Chemistry, MSEIP Project Director, Biomedical Research Director, Dean of Science, and Executive Director for Planning, Research and Development. He has also worked at the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey Campus as a Professor and Director of the Chemistry Department.

 

Dr. Infante has taught courses on analytical chemistry, general chemistry, environmental chemistry, instrumental analysis and inorganic chemistry at undergraduate and graduate levels. His major research areas have been radiation chemistry, analytical determination of metals in groundwater surrounding solid waste landfills and in air particulate. He has excelled with over 50 publications and more than 300 presentations at scientific meetings all around the world, and has received and managed many grants from the National Institute of Health; National Science Foundation; US Department of Commerce; Economic Development Administration; US Department of Education; and MSEIP Program with a total of more than $5.5M. Dr. Infante has supervised more than 200 undergraduates and seven master’s thesis in chemistry. During his tenure at Pontifical Catholic University he has directed and supervised many analytical, radiation and environmental chemistry investigations. Twenty six of his students have completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry at different prestigious institutions in USA. He has received many awards and recognitions, such as the maximum awards from both the Chemical College of Puerto Rico and the local American Chemical Society. He was President of the Federation of Latin-American Chemical Associations, FLAQ during 1982-1984 and 1998-2000, entity that has selected him as Honorary President for his effort in promoting chemistry education. For the last ten years Dr. Infante was a member of the International Activities Committee of the American Chemical Society. He was also the President of the Organizing Committee of several Latinamerican Chemical Congresses (CLAQ) and Pan-American Chemical Congresses; President of the successfully IUPAC World Chemistry Congress held in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2011. He has participated in various IUPAC committees and was recently elected IUPAC Fellow.

 

Dr. Infante has also served in the Puerto Rico Governor’s Advisory Committee for Science and Technology during two terms 1987-1992 and 1995-2000, and was Member of the Chemistry Board of Examiners of Puerto Rico State Department during 1980-1984 and 1995-2000.
